Stump Bucket vs. Stump Grapple: Which One Rips It Best?

Written by Kody Thompson | Feb 4, 2026 5:33:35 PM

Power comes in many forms. When your crew needs to rip out a stump to keep a job on track do you turn to your skid steer stump bucket or the stump bucket grapple? Making the right choice can be the difference between an early out for the day and extending your time onsite. Save time, effort, and shout fewer choice words when you pick the right piece of power.

Raw Power vs Tactical Power

It’s a lesson you probably learned the first time you wandered into your grandad’s workshop - when it comes to getting the job done right, using the right tool helps. With forestry work, like ripping and removing stumps, you have the option of using raw power or taking a more precise, tactical approach.

Stump Bucket Grapple

Great for gaining leverage

Wide grapple opening for larger loads

Ideal for holding a stump in place

Strong breakout force

Uses Grade 50 steel to support heavy loads

Easily move a load off of the ground and onto a truck

Good for digging and trenching

Perfect for cleanup and clearing

Good for not just ripping items out, but securing them as well

What Does the Jobsite Call For?

Choosing the right tool doesn’t just mean knowing the work that needs to be done, it's also about understanding the environment where that work is taking place. When it comes to excavating and removing a stump, the soil it's in can be a big factor in how the job should be planned and the attachment you may need.

Sand

Loose particles of sand make digging easy so a specialized tool isn’t always needed. Sand though does make stability a challenge. You’ll need to work from a platform to keep your equipment stationary and secure. The team may need an engineering solution to keep the hole from filling itself while the complete stump is being removed.

Clay

Heavy, dense clay takes some power to get through. Its moisture content can give the material a certain resistance which makes for a difficult job site. On the plus side, clay is particularly durable so you shouldn’t have any concerns setting equipment on it.

Gravelly Soil

Housing developments are not generally known for the quality of their soil which is why backyard farmers are constantly picking little rocks and bits of gravel out of the dirt. While gravel-filled soil is generally compact and easy to work on, it can be tough to cut through without specialized equipment.

Loam

This is a more scientific term for what we would otherwise call old-fashioned dirt. It’s generally a stable material to work on but it can shift as it is disturbed.

Before starting a job, it can be best to run a soil sample test in the area(s) being worked on

Tale of the Tape

The skid steer loader stump bucket and stump bucket grapple are two powerful beasts built to withstand whatever the day throws at them while the forestry grapple can help you efficiently clear out a site.

The Shape of Power

When you get right down to it, trees have one of nature’s more powerful, breathtaking and badass designs. Prime Attachments not only respects that power, we’ve tried to replicate it in our skid loader stump bucket and stump bucket grapple.

All of our attachments are built right here in the USA with American-made steel. And that’s not all they have in common — each attachment is built to take whatever abuse a job site has to offer.

Don’t let a stump slow you down, request a quote today to let your skid steer start ripping with its most badass attachment yet.
